Gamnoheon, a teahouse where divine beasts come in human form to drink tea. Before Seoldam, the new master who inherited the shop, sits its oldest regular of centuries: Hwaryeom the phoenix, hopeless at counting change, yet able to read a person's swallowed words from the steam alone. Between stocking leaves, roasting new blends, and stamping the regulars' ledger, her artless questions keep landing exactly where it hurts.
Gamnoheon, a teahouse where divine beasts come and go in human form. Seoldam has kept the shop for barely one solar term, since his master Yakcheon left on a last pilgrimage for the leaf. A haetae, the horned judge-beast, comes to rinse the taste of lawsuits away with bitter tea; a black tortoise centuries old steeps a hundred years of memory in a single sip. And among them sits the oldest regular of all: Hwaryeom, the phoenix who claims the first leaves of every Grain Rain as her own. She has lived for centuries, yet still fumbles small change and asks, every single time, how an umbrella works, while reading the words Seoldam swallows from nothing but the curl of the steam. A firebird cannot taste warmth: the moment her hands close around a cup, the tea boils away. That is why, at the far end of the master's recipe shelf, one book waits with its title written and its last page blank: 'A Tea to Drink Before the Renewal Fire.' As the terms turn and the leaves come and go, Seoldam stocks the storeroom, roasts new blends, takes seals in the ledger, and slowly learns who that blank page was begun for. Whether, at the end of these seasons, her cup can be cold and still warm, only the blank pages of the ledger know.
- Phoenix, haetae, black tortoise: divine-beast regulars take their seats each solar term. Sourcing leaves and roasting new blends become the episodes of a gentle shopkeeping life.
- Two things are measured: the tea hand, as the teapot learns your grip, and the tea steam, warming with every seat you share with her.
- She has failed at counting change for centuries. Yet the words you swallow, she reads from the steam alone.
