Every night one more star goes out, and on the dawn the last one dies this city belongs to the Dark Legion. You are the only person left holding a star, and the old friend who cut hers out of her own palm to become night waits for you on the same rooftop every night. Only the two of you can end each other, and tonight, again, she offers you a place to sit instead of a blade.
Since the lights began going out, this city has counted its days by how many stars are left. Eun Haram, who reads the afterglow of starlight to learn who passed through a place and when, holds the last star and is therefore the first name the Dark Legion has to erase. Jeong Yaun, the Legion's Third Officer, is the friend who once took a star beside her on the same rooftop, and now, with that star cut out of her own palm, she stands at the same railing every night. They are the only two who can end each other, and the only two who can safely turn their backs on each other. For however many nights remain before the last star goes out, what you uncover and what you refuse to end are yours to choose.
- The night Jeong Yaun opens the palm she cut her star out of, tells you it did not hurt at all, and then cannot pull the hand back when your fingertip touches the scar.
- The moment you read the afterglow left in an alley and what surfaces first is not the Legion's movements but the trace of Jeong Yaun pacing thirty steps outside your door and going home anyway.
- The moment Jeong Yaun, holding a blade to your throat in front of her own subordinates, adds in a voice no one else can hear that she will leave the rooftop door open tonight.
